Important information
Does the tour include food or drinks?
No. This is a gastronomic walking tour with no tastings included. Along the route, we visit traditional food venues, and the guide explains the products, their history, and cultural context. Each participant freely decides whether to consume something — and pays directly at the venue.
Am I required to consume something at every stop?
No. Consumption is always optional. Most participants do not consume at every stop — and that is expected. The tour works perfectly even if you choose to taste only one or two items.
How much should I expect to spend on food if I choose to consume?
It depends entirely on your choices. On average, participants who decide to consume spend between €5 and €20, but it can be less or more. The tour is designed to work with any budget.
Will we eat a francesinha during the tour?
No tasting is included, but the francesinha is explained from a historical perspective during the tour. At the end of the tour, those who wish are accompanied to a recommended restaurant to try a francesinha or traditional cuisine.
Is the tour suitable for vegetarians / dietary restrictions?
Yes. Since consumption is optional, each participant chooses what they want or do not want to try. The guide provides recommendations adapted to dietary preferences and restrictions.
How much walking is involved?
This is an urban walking tour at a moderate pace. The total duration is about 3 hours, with several stops. The route is suitable for people with normal urban walking mobility.
Do we enter the venues or only see them from outside?
We enter several selected food venues. Some stops are purely historical (no entry), while others allow interaction with locals, time for shopping, or optional consumption.
Can I buy products during the tour?
Yes, time is allocated for that. We visit traditional grocery stores and shops where local products can be purchased. The guide offers practical advice on transport and later consumption.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes, especially for families interested in culture and history.
Highlights
More information
Walking Food Stories Porto is a walking tour that explores the city through its gastronomy, history and cultural identity, without pre-selected tastings and with complete freedom of choice. Over approximately three hours, your guide leads you through the heart of Porto, connecting historic landmarks, traditional taverns, cafés, markets and long-established local shops.
Rather than a classic food tour, this experience focuses on understanding what people eat in Porto, why they eat it, and how food reflects the city’s mercantile, port and working-class past. Along the route, key themes such as the origins of Tripas à Moda do Porto, the creation of the francesinha, the social importance of coffee, and the lasting impact of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries on European gastronomy are explained in a clear and engaging way, always linked to the places you visit.
At each stop, the guide introduces the products and specialties available and offers contextual recommendations, while participants remain entirely free to decide if, what and how much they wish to consume, paying directly at each venue. This approach creates a more flexible, relaxed and authentic experience, avoiding rigid schedules and fixed menus.
The tour also includes the iconic Bolhão Market and traditional grocery stores, where you will learn how to recognise quality local products and make better food choices during the rest of your stay in Porto. The experience concludes with guidance to a traditional restaurant, ensuring you know where to enjoy a good local meal after the tour.
Ideal for curious travellers who want to go beyond clichés, Walking Food Stories Porto is designed for those who value local culture, meaningful stories and the freedom to explore at their own pace.
